It happened two weeks ago when we found a babyboy hedgehog at the bottom of our self-constructed half-finished pond. The flummoxed little creature kept on toddling about wall to wall not even trying not to draw attention to poor himself. So then we helped him out.
He was so tiny, even the armada of those blood-sucking ticks looked like huge pumping oil rigs on his skinny body. Just wasn’t able to cope with the rescue mission by myself. Let the vet get rid of the little vampires instead. He said not to release the animal, ’cause he hadn't got the weight. For couldn’t find any of the poor thing’s relatives around, made him comfortable beneath our terrace. Was treated like a king.
He even attended school some time. LiLi had a short lecture ’bout „The Autumn In Our Garden” and took Jonatan – that’s how we named him – to demonstrate the vividness of this beautiful season. It was a huge success, so she was asked to make another show for her mates in class 1/A. At the same day Jonatan made one more appearance in the English class where together they watched Hedgehog in the Fog, Yuriy Norstein’s classic animated film. To tell the true, our hedgehog slept the screening away. Anyway, the movie’s great!
As days went by, Jonatan showed steady progress in gaining weight, and LiLi found a four-leg companion for him, too. Another abandoned hedgehog. But this one was badly wounded. Some mongrel had attacked her, and was infected with maggots, crawled with vermin. Veterinarian again, but this time real bad news. He wanted to put her to sleep. Can’t be saved he said. Well, I didn’t let it happen! Wasn't an easy time for me and especially for her but we've done it together. Now she’s kicking and alive! I don’t know where Tummy, that’s the name she was given, is right now, ’cause yesterday the unthankful gal left us. Jonatan tried to get away, too, but under the figtree he changed his mind. Poor boy! Hasn't got the guts. Or it might have been his tummy that made him stop.
This pic was taken tonight, as we were making another attempt to let him go away into the woods. All in vain. Still under the terrace snoozing gently. What can I do? Not have the heart to wake you, body!
